Humans have made great strides in spaceflight and space exploration in the relatively short amount of time. This April, we are also proud to witness unforgettable space moments in the history of humankind. As the new era for discovery is unveiling, let’s start the endless learning and exploration with AstroReality.

April 8: Expedition 59 Flight Engineers Anne McClain of NASA and David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency concluded their six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk. This was the third spacewalk in just under a month on the space station. The first two spacewalks installed powerful lithium-ion batteries for one pair of the station’s solar arrays. On March 22, the first spacewalk was completed by McClain and fellow NASA astronaut Nick Hague. On March 28, the second spacewalk was completed by Hague and NASA astronaut Christina Koch.
Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson speaks April 9, 2019 at the 35th Space Symposium.
April 8-11: The 35th Space Symposium took place in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Bringing all these groups together in one place provides a unique opportunity to examine space issues from multiple perspectives, to promote dialog and to focus attention to critical space issues. It has been kept up as the “must attend” space industry event.

April 10: Using the Event Horizon Telescope, scientists obtained the first image of the black hole at the center of galaxy M87. This is a breakthrough discovery could be worthy of a Nobel Prize. “We have seen what we thought was unseeable. We have seen and taken a picture of a black hole,” Sheperd Doeleman, EHT Director and astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., said April 10 in Washington, D.C.

April 23: The annual Lyrids meteor shower peaks Monday night and early Tuesday morning! It’s active each year from about April 16 to 25. In 2019, the peak of this shower – which tends to come in a burst and usually lasts for less than a day – is expected to fall on the morning of April 23, though under the light of a bright waning gibbous moon. Set your telescope and camera ready to record the beautiful moment of the sky. We also prepared tips of astrophotography for beginners.
Today, April 12, is the International Day of Human Space Flight. 58 years ago, cosmonaut Yuri A. Gagarin, onboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft, became the first human in space. It is the beginning of the space era for mankind. Since then, humans have always been aspired to be more – to venture among the stars and to discover the origins of life.
